In September of 2008, myself and fellow photographer Morrigan McCarthy hopped on our bicycles in Rockland, Maine and rode them 11,000 miles around the United States with a singular goal: to photograph and interview everyday Americans about their views on the environment. We rode from Rockland, ME to St. Augustine, FL to San Diego, CA to Seattle, WA and zig-zagged our way back to New York through the American midwest. We rode through 30 states over 10 months, photographing and interviewing people we met along the way, camping at night and gaining a great appreciation for the kindness of strangers!

Bicycling allowed us to travel at a wonderfully slow pace while meeting people from all walks of life. Our lack of a specific destination each day allowed us to completely immerse ourselves in the subcultures and communities we passed through, making the trip awe-inspiring and humbling.

Project Tandem began because we wanted to leave New York City to better understand the way the rest of America felt about climate change and the environment. Data in newspapers or on TV about American perceptions of environmental change seemed misleading, so we wanted to get out and see what people really thought on a more personal level. After interviewing and photographing hundreds of people all around the country, we have put together a show of portraits and an audio track of voices from all over America speaking candidly about the environment. The show illuminates the differences in opinion between regions and individuals, but it also somehow seems to bring us all together. We have had the great pleasure of working with Asymmetrick Arts in Rockland, Maine and the show will have its debut there July 2nd, 2010.

As the Project Tandem show begins its tour of the United States, sharing its time between galleries and public spaces, we are pleased to announce our collaboration with designer Mat Thorne on a book of color photographs of the America that we encountered on the road. These photographs will be paired with never-before seen excerpts from our journals, illuminating the story behind the show- our journey through America by bicycle.
